Chair of South West Clinical Senate

Sally Pearson MBChB, MPH, FFPHM

Sally was appointed as Chair of the South West Clinical Senate in September
2017. She is a specialist in public health medicine with over 20 years of
experience at Board level in both commissioning and provider organisations,
as Director of Public Health for Gloucestershire and as Director of Clinical
Strategy for Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS FT.

In these roles she has provided
leadership for significant strategic developments ranging across the creation
of a networks, the reconfiguration of services including maternity, paediatrics
and emergency services, capital schemes and large-scale IT deployments.
Sally has an interest in approaches to assessing the performance of professionals and has worked with the
Practitioner Performance Advice Service of NHS Resolution National Clinical Assessment since its creation
in 2002 (as the National Clinical Advice Authority), initially as a Secondary Care Adviser, as an Educational
Adviser, contributing to the training of assessors and the development of assessment tools for professionals
where there are concerns about their professional practice. Since 2018 she has been the responsible officer
and Health Professional Alert Notice Lead for NHS Resolution.
She is committed to the delivery of high-quality health care and was a member of the founding cohort of the
NHSE and Health Foundation Q Initiative, designing the model of a connected community of safety and quality
leaders to improve healthcare across the UK. She has led Research networks including the Gloucestershire
Research and Development Consortium and the Western Local Comprehensive Research Network.

David led a busy clinical
department, continues research in respiratory medicine and has published
widely. He lectures frequently around the world on COPD and asthma.
David is a member of the Board of Directors of the Global Initiative on Obstructive Lung Diseases (GOLD)
and of the GOLD Science Committee. Until recently he was an Associate Editor of Thorax.
David trained at Oxford and St Thomas Hospital Medical School: completing a D.Phil. in the Department of
Human Anatomy, Oxford, before finishing his clinical training at St Thomas. He completed his postgraduate
training in respiratory medicine at the Brompton Hospital. He was the Chairman and Clinical Expert for the
COPD Guideline Development Group of the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) in the UK. He was
Respiratory Clinical Lead for the NHS in the South West 2010-2015.

Debbie Rigby

Debbie recently retired from the NHS where she worked for over 40 years. She still supports the seasonal COVID-19 vaccination programme in Mendip and visiting local care homes to offer booster vaccinations.

Debbie worked for many years for the Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group improving patient experience, safety, and quality of care.

Maggie Rae FFPH, FRCP (Hon) FRCP Edin, FRCPath (Hon), FFOM (Hon), FFSRH (Hon)

Maggie Rae is President of the Epidemiological and Public Health Section of
the Royal Society of Medicine. She is also Head of School for the SW Region
Public Health Specialist Training and Deputy Director – Regional Public Health
Programmes, NHS England SW Region.

Maggie has interests in health inequalities, infectious diseases, workforce, education, and standards setting
for Public Health. She is Head of the SW Academy of Population and Public Health and works for NHS England
with the SW Regional Public Health Team.
Maggie is a Visiting Professor of Public Health at the University of the West of England and the University of
Exeter, has been a Director of Public Health twice, and has also led on Health Inequalities and Local Delivery
at the Department of Health and Social Care. She has several publications and has recently co-authored a
book on Healthcare Public Health.
Maggie recently demitted as President of the Faculty of Public Health and worked closely with the Academy
of Royal Medical Colleges, Local Government Association and a wide range of partners who have interests
in Public Health. Maggie is committed to working with all 4 Nations of the UK and public health colleagues
across the world to tackle poverty and inequalities.

Bruce Daniel BSc, FIBMS

I am the Head of Pathology for the South-West region of NHS England and continue to be an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist.

Previously I have been a Pathology service manager, a Pathology Incident Director across the Peninsula Pathology Network (Devon and Cornwall) during the covid pandemic, and a member of the Peninsula Pathology Network board.

During my career I have enjoyed roles as an imaging service manager, and as divisional manager of a clinical support services and cancer division, and a medicine and ED division. My current interests are in all things digital, “externalising pathology”, promoting the principle of “NHS Pathology” and the systems wide “effectiveness” of pathology services against wider clinical services for patients and the population.

Peter Davis MB ChB, MRCP(UK), FRCPCH, FFICM

After qualifying, trained in paediatrics, specialising in paediatric intensive care in UK, Canada and Australia, before returning home and starting as a consultant in Bristol in 2003. PICU clinical lead from 2007-2012, before taking on national roles with NHS England, the Paediatric Intensive Care Audit Network (PICANet) and the British Paediatric Surveillance Unit.

Carol Stonham MBE, MSc, RN, Queen's Nurse

Following 26 years in nursing in general practice Carol now works at Gloucestershire ICB Respiratory Clinical Programme Group and is CYP Asthma Clinical Lead. Carol is also a co-clinical lead of the NHSE Southwest Respiratory Network.

Carol is past Executive Chair of PCRS – the first non-doctor and first female to take the chair. She is current Policy Lead for PCRS. Carol is a director of the UK Lung Cancer Coalition. She co-chairs the Lung Health Task Force early and accurate diagnosis group and is a member of the NHS Long Term Plan Breathlessness Diagnosis group.

Carol received Queen’s Nurse award in 2007 and in 2016 was awarded an MBE for Services to Nursing and Healthcare.

Hannah has a wide range of clinical, academic and system leadership experience relating to patient experience, safety, and quality.

She has worked in and with organisations across the West of England in roles such as Deteriorating Patient Lead, Lead Sepsis and AKI Nurse, QI Matron, Patient Safety Improvement Lead, Senior Project Manager, Senior Clinical Transformation Specialist, AMU Charge Nurse, and various other clinical roles in acute surgical specialties and the ICU.

Hannah is passionate about promoting a culture of continuous learning and collaborative improvement. She enjoys supporting and coaching others to lead positive change in health and social care.

Clare Barlow MBBS BSc PhD FRCP

Dr Barlow is a consultant Medical Oncologist specialising in melanoma and ovarian cancer at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, appointed in 2009.

She is the lead for the Trust Immunotherapy Service, Chair of the South West Immunotherapy Group, Immunotherapy representative for UK SACT Board and a Trustee for the IOCN (Immuno Oncology Clinical Network).

In other roles she is South West Peninsula Clinical Research Network gynaecological cancer sub-specialty research lead and a member of the South West Clinical Senate Council.

Dr Barlow is Principal Investigator for a portfolio of Phase II and Phase III clinical trials.

Dr Barlow trained at St George's Hospital, London. She was awarded a PhD in Molecular Pharmacology in 209 at the Institute of Cancer Research London.

Marion Andrews-Evans RN, BA, MBS, DHS, FCMI

Programme Director, Research & Evaluation and Vaccinations, gloucestershire ICB.

Marion is the programme director (SRO) for the county's vaccination programme. She is also the ICS lead for Research and Evaluation.

Previously, Marion was the Executive Chief Nurse for Gloucestershire ICB where she was the lead for service quality, patient safety, and professional nursing. In this role she also led on Emergency Planning, Infection Control and Chaired the Safeguarding Partnership.

She has published work on understanding and learning from clinical service failure.

Marion is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Gloucestershire and has been a Nurse member of the South West Clinical Senate Council since 2013.

Bernie Marden BSc MBBS MRCP FRCPCH LLM

Having attended medical school in London, bernie trained in paediatrics in Wessex and vancouver. Following his appointment as Consultant Neonatal Paedatrician in bath in 2004 he held a number of leadership roles including Head of Women and Children's, Chief Clinical Information Officer and ultimately, Medical Director of the Trust from 2017.

Consultant Paediatrician and Neonatologist (retired) Royal United Hospitals Trust Bath. Steve is an experienced Paediatrician and Neonatologist from Bath. He was clinical lead of the Western then South West Neonatal network for 15 years. Initially setting up the network in 2005 and then maintaining and developing the service.

He was a member of the National executive committee of the BAPM the national body of British neonatology including chairing working groups establishing national standards for therapeutic hypothermia and the operation and staffing of neonatal units. He was on the steering group of the Welsh governments review of neonatal services in Merthyr Tydfil and has undertaken a number of neonatal services across the country. He is currently the RCPCH Ambassador to the Salisbury Swindon and Bath ICB.
